Board Description: The Bord na Móna group was founded in 1946 to develop Ireland's peat resources. Building on the solid foundations provided by its traditional businesses, the Group has developed an ambitious strategy designed to sustain Bord na Móna into the future and continue to deliver enhanced value to shareholders. It has identified the energy and resource recovery sectors as appropriate areas of growth and development, given its assets, strengths and skills. Bord na Móna has a unique mixture of assets, experience and innovation which will enable it to cross-link its activities in energy, water and resource recovery to provide products and services which will meet Ireland's needs. With this background, it has adopted a new vision for the future sustainable development of Bord na Móna. This has been encapsulated as: "A New Contract with Nature" Bord na Móna owns some 80,000 ha of peatland, employs approximately 2,000 people and operates out of 30 localities mainly in Ireland, but also in the United Kingdom and eastern United States. It had a turnover of over €370 million in the year 2007/2008. It operates in four main industry sectors: In Energy, it provides power generation by Edenderry Power and from renewables and supplies peat to two ESB stations. In Environmental, it supplies integrated resource recovery including recycling, collection and managed landfill services and pollution abatement products and environmental consultancy . In Fuels, it provides home and industrial heating products including coal, peat briquettes, oil distribution and other complementary products. In Horticulture, it supplies peat-based growing media products in Ireland and internationally.
